The term "going dark" refers to the situation in which law enforcement agencies are unable to access critical evidence for investigations due to technological advancements that protect data privacy. This occurs even when they have the legal authority to obtain that information, such as through search warrants. The rise of encryption and other privacy-enhancing technologies has made it difficult for law enforcement to intercept or access communications and data, which can hinder their ability to investigate crimes effectively. This phenomenon poses a significant challenge for public safety, as it can prevent law enforcement from gathering evidence that is vital for solving cases or preventing future crimes.

Understanding "going dark" is essential in discussions about the balance between individual privacy rights and the needs of law enforcement to maintain public safety. This highlights the ongoing debate about technological innovation and its implications for crime prevention and investigation.
